AY 2007 Scholarship Recipients

The Universities Space Research Association is pleased to announce that the following students have been selected to receive one of USRA's scholarships this year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our scholarship selection committee.

USRA Memorial and Education Scholarships

  • Andrew J. Longenecker from Jupiter, Florida has been awarded the James B. Willett Memorial Scholarship. Andrew will graduate from Duke University in May, 2007 with a triple major degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Economics.
  • Megan Nix from Riverside, California has been awarded the Thomas R. McGetchin Memorial Scholarship. This fall, Megan will be a senior at the University of California, Riverside where she plans to graduate in 2007 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering.
  • Joseph Yurko from Irwin, Pennsylvania has been awarded the John R. Sevier Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Yurko is a junior this year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and will graduate in 2008 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering.
  • Matthew Sanborn is the recipient of a USRA Education Scholarship. Matthew is from Chandler, Arizona and a senior at Arizona State University. He plans to graduate in 2007 with a B.S. degree in Chemistry.

John Mc Lucas Astronaut Safety Research Prize

USRA administers the John Mc Lucas Astronaut Safety Research Prize on behalf of the Arthur C. Clarke Foundation and the Space Shuttle Children's Fund for the purpose of studying and improving astronaut safety. Two awards were made this year:
  • Ms. Daniella. Della-Guistina, University of Arizona, received a McLucas Research Prize for her project "The Martian Bus Schedule: An Innovative Technique for Protecting Humans on a Journey to Mars." Ms. Della-Guistina is also a 2006 recipient of the USRA NIAC Student Fellows Prize.
  • Elaine F. Chan, Cynthia J. Chang, Alexander C. Gordon, Eric L. Vu, Peter J. Yang-Rice University, Department of Bioengineering
    This creative team was awarded a McLucas Research Prize for their USRA/RASC-AL project "Comprehensive Musculoskeletal Maintenance and Treatment System". This integrative system could aid in sustaining astronaut musculoskeletal health and contribute to the feasibility of long-term space travel.
