The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) was incorporated in 1969 under the auspices of the National Academy of Sciences to serve as an entity through which universities and other research institutions can cooperate with one another, with the government of the United States, and with other organizations toward the development of knowledge associated with space science and technology.

Today, USRA is a consortium of more than 100 major research universities with programs in astronomy, physics, space sciences, and related disciplines. USRA employs some 400 full-time staff, visiting scientists, and students to operate twelve programs and institutes through more than 100 contracts with NASA, the National Science Foundation, and other government agencies.
