At USRA, we seek to achieve objectives in science, engineering and discovery that don't fit neatly into an economic model. We serve a human purpose that can't be priced at a profit. People tell me that this makes them feel very proud to be a part of USRA. In addition to a tremendous purpose, we also have an impressive heritage. USRA's roots trace back to the formation of the Lunar Science Institute by the National Academy of Sciences in 1968 at the height of the Apollo program. Over the past four decades, USRA has served the academic community, government space programs, scientists and explorers, students, and the public across the entire breadth of space-related science and technology. It is humbling to be part of such a terrific organization. Given the discoveries in space that are yet to be made, it is also extremely exciting!
USRA is comprised of 104 member universities, and serves to strengthen and expand links among and between the university space research community and national space programs. USRA currently operates 20 facilities and has programs that employ more than 400 scientific, technical, and professional staff. Our staff manages more than 50 separate Education and Public Outreach programs targeted to a variety of audiences, from K-12 through educators and the public at large. Our technical competencies span the space-related and technology disciplines that are most closely aligned with NASA's Mission Directorates, and many of our programs are co-located at NASA Centers. USRA's scholarship program supports students with a demonstrated interest in the physical sciences and engineering, especially those in space research or space science.
There is something else that makes me very proud to be a part of USRA. In the process of meeting people here I learned that USRA people care very deeply about others. They care about their colleagues, their families and the challenges they face. It is a special characteristic and one we value immensely. I am confident that you will soon discover this and also the benefits of membership in USRA-you and your institution can become part of a dynamic, collaborative association where universities, other research organizations and terrific people cooperate effectively with each other, with the U.S. government, and other public and private entities to develop and expand our knowledge of space.
Finally, let me say thank you. Thank you for your commitment to space, to science, and to USRA. We are glad you chose to visit our web site, and hope you found it helpful.
